Intercooler vs. cold air intake w/supercharger

I have a supercharger on a 2002 4Runner. I was considering a new air filter like the K & N, but was advised to use an intercooler instead. I havent had much luck in researching these, and was wondering if anyone had suggestions, experiences or advice on the subject.

To clarify, what Im trying to find out is the effect, cost and value of each system when coupled with a supercharger (the guy at the Toyota dealership told me a cold air intake shouldnt be used with a supercherger; not clear on why).

Any thoughts?

Likely because of the ping that would develop from opening up the airway with a S/C. Also K&N's tend to foul the MAF sensor so most recommend using an Amsoil filter instead. You have quite a bit of reading to do on this site:

Make sure to read all his sections, very informative!

Intercooling a Roots type blower is pretty hard to do. Not impossible, costly, but not impossible. Intercooling a Toyota S/C would require alot of R&D and a new hood to clear all the added height.

As MTL said the K&N, and other open element filters could cause pinging, as they allow more air into an already lean running S/C engine.

I have the TRD filter in the stock location, no deckplate mod, with the elbow still attached. I keep it that way because at 5800+ feet pinging is present whenever you hammer the pedal.

Do you have any fuel mods on your truck (7th injector or URD fuel kit)? If you do not have fuel mods so you can tune your truck with the proper amount of fuel stay away from the K&N FIPK. You are running too lean already and the K&N will make the problem worse. If you do the fuel mods and properly tune your truck, you can run any intake you want. I still would not and do not run the K&N. I run the Deckplate mod and an Amsoil filter.
An intercooler setup on the TRD blower, as said before, can be done but would be cost prohibitive.
My advice is to do fuel mods, run a 2.2" pulley, and install an Aquamist 2D water/methanol injection system. It will be good for your engine and haul ass at the same time.
