We need the year of the 4Runner to be of any assistance. Also www.crutchfield.com will tell you what size speakers fit.

Two major things to consider. What are you using to power the speakers? How well are they mounted, or are they secure and somewhat airtight against the mounting hole in the door.

These components sound OK with a factory radio, but do with with more wattage.

The factory speakers can blow with distortion. Bumpin Yota can add more to this, but at some point the electical sine wave/volume coming out of the amp can cause the speaker coil to deflect or just burn out. Loud is a relative term.

eeeeeh not distortion. A speaker is blown one of two ways. FUBAR the suspension from over excursion/damage, the cone, etc OR by melting the glue that holds the voice coil to the former. When the latter happens you will end up shorting out the transducer in short order...hopefully your amp(s) have short circuit protection.

Having said that, distortion doesnt generate heat, but rather passing current through a wire that has resistance does. As a foot note I can send 100 watts clipped, distorted, etc to one of my L7 12s and it will laugh at that 100 watts. Or I can put one of my zapco 9.0s on one of my Orion 6.5s and pop it like popcorn with that 2.2kW rms even though the signal was 100% distortion free....

Power delaminates coils, not distortion.

Id bet a box of donuts his surrounds rotted though, or his kids wanted to 'rock out' hehehehe.

Anyhow IIRC a 99 has 6.5s all the way around. If an amplified system, you can bypass the amp directly behind the radio, and tap into factory wires there as well.

Of the mainstreams that sound good, look at kicker, jl, infinity, mtx, (that shocked me,) image dynamics, etc
