Just changed the oil again. This time I used an OEM filter. I have been using K&Crap filters for a couple of years now. Is it my imagination or is this thing running better?

I did not realize these OEM filters could be had for so cheap...especially from the stealership.

 

The oem filters are important to use, they will not drain out when the truck is parked. Other filters drain, and have to be refilled before oil starts to go. This is bad obcourse on start up, and a old mechanic friend swears 22r-e headgasket problems wouldnt happen if the timing chain guides didnt brake do to low or no oil the first moments of start up.

 

i have no point of reference b/c oem filters are all i've ever used, but i've never had any problems i could chalk up to the toyota filter.

 

Are they always that cheap? Performance Products sells them for like 7 bucks each. Damn I wish I would have known about that draining thing.

performance products also sells the OEM foglight switch for $60. they're $12 at a dealer

 

i'm not gonna waste my money on OEM when i can buy a wix 1515(general purpose ford) that holds more oil and works just as well.

 

as far as the ford number goes... that 1515 is the fl1a right kyle? or is it the 400s?

And kyle, you usually have great advise but wtf will a bigger filter do for you? The amount of oil flowing is limited to diameter of the intake/out take lines. I doubt they filter any better, maybe a bit longer. Then there is the possibility that there is a greater demand on the oil pump to fill 'er up everytime you start. That is a big deal as that means it is a longer time untill the oil hits the block at start up.

there's a couple reasons i like the big filter. one is that it holds over half a quart more oil that the normal sized filter, and also, the fact that more filtering media means it'll go longer without getting restricted.

wix filters have an anti drainback valve, the oil light goes out as soon as the engine pops. not like the fram that came on my truck when i bought it, it'd take 5 or 6 seconds to register oil pressure...

 

Also the Napa Gold filter (#1348 for the OEM replacement) is made by Wix (identical in every way except the sticker). I don't know if it cost less than the one with the Wix sticker or not.

 

Why would I be wasting my money???

my OEM toyota filter drains. everytime i change the oil after letting the truck sit for a couple of hours the filter is empty.

i use oem filters...they're cheap and seem to work OK. (and the dealer is as close to my house as any other parts place. also gives me an excuse to go shoot the ˟˟˟˟˟ with the parts counter guys which has paid off as they have started giving me discounts on parts. and they are cool guys anyway.)

oem filters do have an anti-drain back valve...but, so do many oil filters.

if you ever remove the oil filter after the truck has been sitting overnight, you will find that the oil has, in fact, drained out of the filter in spite of the valve...as is the case with every anti-drain back valve equipped oil filter i have ever tried.

bottom line, i don't think it makes a huge amount of difference what brand of oil filter you use. most of them have anti-drain back valves...most or all of those valves only hold the oil in the filter for so long before allowing it to drain back out of the filter.

there are prolly some filters out there that perform better than oem (which ones seems to depend entirely on who you ask), but there are prolly some that perform worse as well.

personally, i would rather just stick with oem and it's satisfactory (even if not optimum) level of performance than risk choosing an aftermarket filter that performs worse than oem given that the oem filters are really pretty cheap.

 

Did I mention the stealership has them for $3.57 and would have gave me a better price if I had bought more of them. Also, shipping is extremely fast and free since I have to drive home from work anyway.

 

Maybe I'll buy some for that price.......No really, if your local dealer is selling them for that you better jump on it. That is a really cheap price.
