84 Toyo will not idle on own

Hey guys, hoping you can help me out.

The truck is an 84 toyo 4x4...22R with close to 400,000 miles....but other than todays misfortunes...it runs like a champ once it warms up.

Today while stopping for a light, my truck stalled. I restarted it and went on my way, not thinking much of it. Come to the next light, same thing happened...

The truck will not idle on it's own...i have to keep the rpms up by holding the gas down.

Any suggestions?

Check all your vac. lines for a leak.

test your idle cut solenoid. it has a black wire and a white wire with a black stripe coming out of it, it's on the same side of the carb as the throttle linkage. when power is applied to it, it opens a valve that lets fuel into the idle circuit. its purpose is to cut off the fuel to the idle circuit in the carburetor to prevent dieseling when you shut the engine off. however, it'll idle like crap or not at all when it's not working properly.

I was thinking about that, but isn't it kind of strange that it would just lose adjustment for no reason?

I will check into this when I get home from work.

Any other suggestions that i could try would be great as well.

Thanks for your help so far guys!

I have an 84 Camry and it got to where it would not idle at a red light unless I slightly kept my foot on the gas-easy to do since it was a manual . Other than that, it would run fine, just wouldn't idle by itself.

After reading posts here, I used a can of BG 44K on it and it helped. I later ran a can of Seafoam through the brake booster line and it improved even more. I need to run another can of each through it, but I've been too lazy.

Maybe you have a lot of built up crud. A new fuel filter may help too if it has been a while since it was changed.

I second what Kyle said . Usually caused by a bad emissions computer . The idle solinoid is not grounding .

had that happen on a 86 PU with a 22R in it. Had to put in a new power valve diaphragm

$9, 4 screws and it was done.

Is it possible that there isn't an idle/fuel cut solenoid? I have looked all over and can't locate it.

Is this what i am looking for? (this is not actual picture of mine) If that is it, i don't have it on my 22r.

Also, something else i noticed is that the idle problem only starts once the engine has come up to temperature.. On initial startup, it runs rough like it always has, but does not stall. Stalling only occurs once the temp is up.

Any more advice is greatly appreciated.

yea i thought something was wierd.

Also, since the solenoid hasn't been there the whole time i've owned the truck.....leads me to believe that wasn't the problem.

Any suggestions as to what else may be causing my idle problem?

So, you have no FCOS on your carb and don't think that's it as it used to run fine w/o it eh?

Choke sticking or not working properly??

When checkin' vac. lines flex them if possible. I've seen linear cracks along the lines before that are only visible if the hose is flexed. Can be very tricky to find as at a quick glance, they look A-OK.

With it die'n once warm, I keep thinking choke.
Definately keep us posted and good luck!

Unfortunaley, I just rebuilt my 1st engine (22R) and have some choke problems myself. I swapped to a manual choke so I didn't have to mess with that automatic one. Wish I could but that's one of the reasons I'm following your thread. I have 2 carbs and I'm hoping to make 1 good one from em.

I bet Kyle22R could help. He's always helped me out in the past on these kinds of issues. Kyle?????????
