How do I install the rear speakers on my 91 4Runner?
I have searched the forums and have found a few cases where people asked this question, but the answer never quite comes out in the responses. I've crawled around back there and looked at the panels and they look totally seamless, no screws or snaps or anything. I tried pulling on them a bit to see if they pop off, but that doesn't seem to be the case. What do I do?
Also, I assumed the speakers would be behind those grills on the panels on the side, but when I actually listen, the sound is coming from the little grills on the ceiling panel near the light in back. Does that mean the previous owner did something funny to it?

There's the threshold strip (which you've found), then you have to remove the upper rear light valance by reaching your fingers underneath the rear edge of it, under the door gasket, and pulling down while you are sitting inside on the floor, then unplug the wiring harness and remove it;
Then you're onto removing the 4 screws (2 on either side) that attach the upper corner of the quarter trim panel to the body;
Remove the cargo pocket doors and set aside;
Then remove the 14mm bolts (2-one on either side) that hold the top of the rear seat belt to the body and lay aside;
Using a small, thin screwdriver or knife blade, pop out the cover caps that are on the seatbelt retaining clips mounted on the "C" pillars and remove the screws and the clips with them;
Then dig your fingers under the bottom trailing edge of the lower "C" pillar cover and pull it out away from the body and the lower, front edge of the quarter trim panel; (almost there now)
Now, position yourself at the rear of the trim panel that you wish to remove and while pulling down and out on the upper, rear corner where you removed the 2 screws, reach into the cargo pocket and pull outwards on it;
The panel will "pop" loose and you'll want/need to work your way all around it, pulling outwards only, until you have it freed of it's mounts and then lay it over on it's side.
There are 4 screws that hold either speaker in.
To replace the trim panel, position it in place, working to line up the mounting pins with their respective holes and then push/pop it back into place, taking care to tuck the upper rear corners in behind the overhead tweeters or frame work.
Replace all that you've removed in the reverse order an oh yeah, have fun!
