Alright I am thinking about buying a bed mount tool box to get all of my straps, jacks and crap out from behind my seats and to allow me to haul some real tools and spares without the fear of them getting wet or stolen. What type of box would you recommend? Stainless, Alloy, or Plastic? A truck pocket wheel well box, or a full behind the cab box OR a side mount box? Are there any brands that are a good deal? I looked at the local farm store and at Sears but wasn’t really impressed, sears has a composite plastic box for $160 and the farm store has an alloy box for $300, Ive seen some of the plastic boxes bending in the middle and I dont want that!! Anyone have any pictures of different styles in Toyotas?

 

alloy or steel rear cab mount "standard bed box" is what i voted as its what i am going to get when i can...

here is something to add.... our local auto stores, kragens - pepboys, etc have the aluminum plate standard boxes for $100, black alluminum tread for $110 and the composite plastic for like $70-80 (i hate these though, never seen a good one that actually works)

Looks like some of you use your trucks to haul toys. Just a comment about the mounting for your box. A bud of mine invented a new devise to mount a box that is really nice. Check out SpeedLatch.net. Don't know of any other mount that lets you remove and replace a box in just a few seconds when you need your full bedspace to move or haul toys. Looks like it only works in full-size Tundas, but not positive on that.

 

ive got a Standard low profile bed box from Kragen Oreilly autoparts, Delta brand for about $250 love it stores all my tools

 

I am running two side boxes and a standard box, all three aluminum and would be lost without them.

 

I definitely recommend the low profile box and craigslist is your friend. Got mine for 100 bucks. Just make sure the locks and latches work.

 

SCToy, on the low profile what brand and model do you recommend for a reg cab reg bed Taco? I can't wait to get one of these.

 

ive got a high profile standard mount weatherguard. very high quality! def go for steel or alloy. plastic is very easy to break into. side boxes are nice if you need full bed length. standard boxes are good if you need lots of storage

 

I have a Kobalt brand box, quality is decent, but I think there are probably more secure boxes out there.

 

I would'nt waste your money on plastic boxes.... those wheel well boxes are too small to be of any real use... the low profile steel box looks nice but remember space will be restricted for taller items... since you want to put a trail jack in there I'd get the single lid type that will give you unrestricted access...

I saw an ad someplace a while back either a mag. or some online link for a co. that would sell you an automotive lock cylinder that could be coded to match your trucks door/ign key... might have even been an option on the box itself...

 

i like the wheel well box they sell at northern tool one with drawers and enclosed gun rack for tools and what not and one plain one for chains and straps and ya can still run a tuenno cover or roll bar with the wheel well box. ive got a plastic cab box atm and it sucks @#$ also got a daimond plate one with a hole in it. if you get a cab box get the one door kind there far better

Thanks for the input. Security (nothing expensive going in) and large heavy items are not of the essence here. There is a small Kobalt that I'm looking at. It's basically to fit fishing gear in for two people so there's room in the cab to sit comfortable.

 

Personally I'd get one larger then you think you'll need because once you have one you'll be surprised the amt. of stuff you all of a sudden want/need to carry and secure.
And not just your junk... there will be your fishin' buddy's junk... your girlfriend's junk... the 'rent's stuff they want you to move... the list goes on...
