Car Alarm / Door Locks / Wiring General

I am attempting to install an alarm in my 4Runner.

I have the wiring schematic in the Haynes manual, but it is only moderately helpful. I also got some good information from the12volt, but I am still having problems.

In wiring the (-) door lock, and (-) door unlock outputs on the alarm, the12volt says to use the blue/white for lock, and the blue/yellow for unlock. (these are in the harness that connects to the Door Lock Relay behind the speaker, Driver's side)

The problem I am having is that there are 2 blue/white wires in that harness. One is large, probably 12-14 gauge, and the other is smaller (16-18 gauge). I think it is the smaller one becasue the blue/yellow wire is of similar size, and next to it.

I know i could use my DMM, but I have the battery disconnected, and it is quite a mess at this point.

The Haynes manual is of no help as well, because the electrical diagrams it has are geared to the Pickup and 84-89 4Runner.

Does anyone have experience in wiring the second gen. 4Runner up for an alarm? (I am using an Avital 3300 - DEI)

Thanks,

I am your new best friend:

ITEM | WIRE COLOR |POL| WIRE LOCATION |

| STARTER|black |+ |ignition harness |
| IGNITION|black/yellow |+ |ignition harness |
| SECOND IGNITION|blk/yel or blk/red |+ |ignition harness |
| ACCESSORY|blue/red |+ |ignition harness |
| POWER LOCK|blue/white |- |door control relay *2 |
| POWER UNLOCK|blue/yellow |- |door control relay *2 |
| PARKING LIGHTS +|green | |drivers kick panel *3 |
| PARKING LIGHTS -|red/black | |steering column |
| HEADLIGHTS|red/white |- |steering column |
| DOOR TRIGGER|black/white or black|- |2 pin plug top fusebox |
| TRUNK/HATCH PIN|green/white |- |rear window relay *4 |
| TACHOMETER|black | |check connector *1 |
| BRAKE WIRE|green/white |+ |brake switch |
| HORN TRIGGER|green/red |- |steering column |
| WIPERS|blue/black |+ |steering column |
| LF WINDOW UP/DN|blu/grn - blu/yel |A |in drivers door |
| RF WINDOW UP/DN|red/blk - red/grn |A |in drivers door or dkp |
| LR WINDOW UP/DN|blu/blk - red/blu |A |in drivers door or dkp |
| RR WINDOW UP/DN|red/yel - red/blu *5|A |in drivers door or dkp |

Notes:
*1 The diagnosis connector is located on the passenger inner fender near the fuse/relay box. *2 Door control relay is located behind the drivers dash speaker. *3 Can also be found at any illuminated switches, radio, or some cigarette lighters. *4 The rear power window relay is in the left rear quarter panel, behind trim, near tail light. The trunk pin can also be found yellow/black in the drivers kick (rest at ground, diode Isolate from dash indicator). *5 The rear tailgate window motor wires are red for up, and green for down. Both wires can be found at the rear window relay. We advise that you use the trunk pin wire to disable your rear window module, so the rear window does not operate when the rear door is open.

Good luck

btw- both of your door lock wires, blue/white blue/yellow will be the same gauge. Usually 16-18 gauge. I just test them with a multimeter or test light.

Thanks, I actually already have that list, but thanks anyways!

Yeah, my guess was that they would be the same gauge, but you are right, I will just have to break out the DMM to be sure.

Thanks!

Update:

I finally got the DMM out and tested the wires. Got everything working except the door triggers, and the remotely-operated rear window.

Remote start is really cool. I am thinking about hooking up one of the aux channels to control the rear heater. Shouldn't be difficult, and it would be really cool to not have to worry about setting the heater before I leave the car. This way I could just start the car, start the heat, and then drive away once it is warm.

Not bad for $150!

Thanks for the help.
