My son has a 96 Tacoma ext. cab 4x4 with the split bench seats and wants to upgrade to buckets and a console like the ones in my older sons 01 Pre-runner. I've looked hard at the sliders and they look he same to me. Does anyone know what year(s) will bolt right on?

Sport / separate buckets from any 95.5 - 04 Tacoma should bolt right in as direct replacements for his 60/40 split bench (with at least 90% certainty). If you want 100% certainty, look for seats from any 95.5 - 97 (Tacoma 1st generation). Both the 60/40's and the separate buckets use the same 4-bolts-per-seat layout.

NOTE: The separate / sport buckets *may* result in a slight shift in sitting height (if so, maybe on the order of 1" lower) relative to the 60/40's.
