Vaio Laptop

Hey my sister had a Vaio laptop for awhile... its really nice 2.3 ghz... 512 mb ram... 20 gigs... and she dropped it... now the lcd screen came off but it still works fine... just needs new pins... but there is one problem the keys are now messed up... not all work and some make the wrong character... say when you press a T it makes a 5... and I was wondering is it screwed for good... or is there something you can do about it... I'm not horrible with computers but never had it happen and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with it...

Thanks

Ian

If you find a keyboard, you should also be able to find documentation on Sony's Vaio website showing you how to replace it. Usually it should be a couple of screws underneath the laptop that hold it in place, then you lift the keyboard carefully to one side to find where the cable is. Be careful about that cable, because it's not usually very long. Pull that cable and do the opposite to install the new one.

if i remember correctly.. on vaio's.. with the laptop in front of you, if you feel up the left side of the laptop right at the very back of the side (lol).. you'll see a little screw, undow that, then the 'plate' that goes across the top of the laptop (purple i think) will slide left and pop off. then you will blatently see the different screws holding the keyboard in place. i can't remember if there are any screws on the bottom side or not, but if there are they will be labeled 'kb' or something similar. gently pull the board out of place, pop up the 'pressure clip' that holds the ribbon cable in place, insert the new cable, push the pressure clip back down, and finish re-assembling as you took it apart.

The connector for the keyboard may have come loose so you might check that as well before getting a new one.

This might sound stupid but I have seen this problem before.....

On most laptops there is a function key that turns half your keybord into a key pad, I have seen this inadvertantly get switched. Look close to make sure that there isn't a smaller secondary marking on the key which is the characeter that keeps showing up. Sometimes it can be a really simple solution...

Like I said this has come up at work before....

Haha ya Yoda its not that but thanks I understand how that can happen...

Ya and Greenrunner on laptops there is actually an option in the bios where you can turn the number lock key off or on... on the reboot so sometimes its marked on in the options and so everytime it reboots the number lock key is on...

Anyone know where I can pick up a replacement keyboard for it?

Ian

Oh and I'm gonna post some pics of the lcd so I can get some advice on that too...

Check here first...

If you can't find it here, go to Sony website.
