Skid plates for a paranoid newbie... any suggestions?
Hi all,
Hopefully, I'll be going on my first family outing in the truck with a group of local campers who like doing the off road type of camping.
Anyway, they suggested that skid plates would be ideal for doing the off beaten track. I've got one OEM skid plate protecting the oil pan in my 88 Toyota pickup (3 bolts are left, one has sheared off leaving a stud). I've heard of other skid plates for different parts of the undercarriage that may be ideal.
Any thoughts? Post pics if you've got them please. Also, what are the costs associated with these plates? Can they be fabbed if I have access to a tube bender (I was thinking of sliders)?

I'm assuming these local campers aren't all that hardcore so I think the budbuilt crossmember would be overkill $$$. Just get some sliders for now and you'll be fine. Your rear bumper might take a beating though.

Well, if you are interested in pursuing wheeling more, then get the bud built. If no, then, like Robinhood said, don't. They are AWESOME, however. I've landed the whole truck on that skid plate, and then driven off, and it didn't flex at all. I love it. Money well spent in my opinion.
