If you can get it for cheap then I'd do it. The 22r instead of the re is definitely a bummer, but if you could get it for $1500 it'd be a sweet deal. As far as the rust goes...the truck is nearly 20 years old and lived where it snowed...that's how it goes.

yeah 10hp and fuel injection! along with a wider rear axle and an ifs steering box (if it IFS). two years ago i bought an 84 straight axle 4runner and i wish i would have taken the advice of my friend an bought a 86 or later. i hated the carburator (it sucked on steep hills and i could not get it to tune properly) i swapped out the rear axle for an ifs one and doing hysteer came out to be a lot more expensive. i basically spent a lot of money just finding and installing ifs parts. A toyota solid axle is not hard to find or a dana 44 for that matter. I guess my suggestion would be to hold out an buy like a 88 or even try a 90s model they are not much more.

no no no, dont get me wrong here. i just think it is easier to buy a IFS truck and do a solid axle swap rather than buying a straight axle truck and searching around for IFS parts i.e. fuel injection, IFS steering box, axle, and plus an IFS truck would probably be cheaper so that is more money and probably nicer. But i wouldnt buy an old IFS truck unless i was going to SAS it.
