work computer: leaving unattended for the week

Anyone as paranoid as I am that while on vacation, the IT guy will snoop through your computer to see what websites you have visited, what files you have opened, what e-mails you received, and what JPEGS you have viewed?

I am not really guilty of anything, but would prefer if the computer was left alone in my absence. I normally clear the internet history, and clear the start-up settings on a daily basis. Is there anything more I can do?

clear the cache and temp folders... there are tons of them.. also the cookies folder... there are actually a lot of them... if the IT guys want to find something they will, its really hard to get rid of everything, and hte IT guys normally know all the tricks where to look... do you have admin capabilities? or no? if yes, you can lock them out... if not, your pretty much SOL.. unless you can say you might be doing some work @ home and can actually take the computer with you... or open it up and take the HD home....

I thought you can never "really" get rid of info on your HD.
There was just a child porn case where the guy thought he erased everything, but they still found evidence of everything he did on his computer.

Man if the IT guy has enough time to snoop through your computer then he must have no other work. Being in IT, I don't care what other employees have on their PC's, I am too busy doing my work (or surfing on this fine forum..LOL). I wouldn't be too worried about it.

As far as permanent removal of data, the only sure-fire way of doing this is to get an NSA grade degausser and degauss the HD to make it non-functioning or do an NSA wipe on the hard drive where in place of data it does one pass where it writes all 1's in place of the data, then does another pass writing all 0's and finally does a third pass writing 1's and 0's on the drive.

I wouldn't be too worried about it if you've done nothing wrong...just my 2 cents worth. I only snoop when I'm asked to snoop, but I just don't snoop for the hell of it or because I'm bored. I have alot more work to do than that....

Same here...we "snoop" when asked. Chances are all the websites are logged not only on your computer but somewhere else too. Our URL Filter logs every website someone visits. It'll flag suspicious activity and users that spend too much time online. Again, not many companies care what you do unless a manager asks IT to look into things. If you arent getting things done, your manager may go to IT and ask to see what you've been doing all day. We had a case like that recently. Manager needed valid reason to fire someone...so he was monitored for a month. The employee was fired for spending too much time online doing personal business on company computers.

As PoBoy said, you could be being logged somewhere else. We have a setup where we can also see which users visit what sites at any given time. I've had several instances where I've had to look through logs just because a user wasn't doing his\her work.

oh yeah, i forgot that our servers used to log everything as well, we would have a profession company come every week and take out server log reports to some vault somewhere... so if there is bad stuff on you, they can find it there also even if there is nothing on your computer, it can still be traced....

Is your personal work PC connected to a office network? Then I believe your IT folks don't have to check your onw PC to see where your surfing. Our office network tracks our Internet cruising within the computer center. So no matter if you clear the cache, temp files and etc, the central main server still has a record of everything.
