I have a 89 P/U, 3.0, auto. It has developed a hideous speedometer squeal when cold. The speedo goes crazy, and the overdrive light goes out. Usually when the squealing ceases, the light will come back on. Now it has gone out, and won't come back. The squel hasn't happened in a while, and everything works fine, just the light is out. How the speedo cable squealing and the o/d light going out related? Is there a sensor or something? How do I fix this? I tried taking the cable loose from the tranny to lube it, but couldn't get the cable to pull out. Any help is greatly apprecieted!

 

I had that same speedo squeal problem on my '90 Yota pickup. I heard that graphite powder down the speedo cable would do the trick (or a completely new cable), but never got around to trying it. I didn't have a related O/D light issue, though.
