Since, I'm in college and my truck broke down while was home I had to leave it there when I came back to school for the spring semester. Well my brother in law just started working on it. And he called me tonight saying that the reason why the timing chain broke was the shop that worked on my truck didn't tighten down the guides. A bolt is missing or they didn't put one on.. Either the bolt is in the oil pan or it they didn't put on in. He said the said the chain broke at the main link and of all the Toyotas he's worked (which is a whole lot) if that link breaks there is atleast some damage to a piston. So what should I look out for guys and what all should be looking to replace?

a 22R is an interference engine, so if the timing chain breaks the pistons and valves crash into each other. generally the valves get bent and pistons can suffer some damage. either way, time for a rebuild...

 

Yea he showed me pictures of other engines he has there that have had the same problem. The pistons big scuff marks in them. He said if the pistons are damaged he's just gonna take the engine out and rebuild it. It's a 22RTE engine.

 

Good news, my brother in law got the head off my truck tonight and said the pistons look good and the valves aren't bent and no damage to the head. But there is a ton of carbon build up on the pistons, etc.. It must have been running really rice. What may have caused this? timing being off?

 

ya your timing being off will create a rich condition, also the amount of miles it starts to build up.
