Question about lift/tires

I was talkin to someone who use to own a 4Runner... a first generation and he said that he had stock gears... and just a 2-3 in body lift... and 33's... and he said that it was fine... so i was wondering how slow will it actually be? around in mph... is it almost unbearable? will you even be able to go through anything? and what are the stock gears for an 86 4runner?

Thanks ian

it all depends... stock gears could be anything form 3.07s (what i have in my 4x2) to what i beleive i have seen 4.88s in toyotas... you must find out what your gear ratio is.... www.4crawler.com has a list and breakdown of wheere to find the axle code and hat it means....

i had 3.73s in my explorer with 235/75/15" tires and went up to 31s and didnt notice much difference in mileage or power loss... a lot has also to do with driving conditons as well... are you a fast and furious driver or a grandma driver?

milegae and performance is very subjective... also so is the owner.... some feel the power is jsut fine for their uses, some modify the vehicle to suit them...

you should be ok the gears are probly 4.10 and you will be slower off the line but your top speed will increas not much though. it's not to bad with the 5 speed. i had 33 on a 82 with the 4 speed and it did ok. the 5 speed now helped a lot.

that is the one advantage of a m/t over an a/t. you can upsize the tires moderately w/o having to regear. autos are not as forgiving, going from 31 stock size to 33's creates a whole host of problems costing $$$ to make right.

Ok but I have an '86... and its an automatic... so with the automatic it might not be very good is what you are saying? Is there anything at all I could do to just help make it work better without regearing? Anyone that isnt a lot of money that will help?

Im running stock gears on my truck right now. Its gota 22re and it still pulls in 5th gear. Around town its fine, just when u get to the hills it really noticable. I do have a bit of motor work done though.
