I'm not sure where the knock sensor is on your 96, but on my 90 that just went through the recall its under the manifold.
I have just found out the hard way that it's worth the effort to get a new knock sensor while they are replacing the gasket. They only listed the wire on my recall invoice. I believe this wire is now giving me a code 52 CEL less than a month after the work was done. I attribute this CEL to the wire either not being replaced and then damaged during the recall work or the new wire was not mounted properly.
I'm going to have to try and work something out with the dealer to see if this can be remedied
