Help with torrents please

I've been trying to get a program using a torrent downloader (bittorrent.com), and although the program is downloading, it's only going 15k at the most, and that's not often either.

I have cable and songs I download using other programs go faster than lightning, so I know it's not the connection. The reason I have to use the torrent is because I can't find the version I need on the P2P programs.

I read somewhere about opening certain ports, but I have no idea how. Can anyone help me out with this?

Bit Torrent is a file sharing program. Thus, if you can't upload, it won't let you download very fast. If you have a firewall, you have to open up ports 6881 to 6889 when running Bit Torrent. See here for more details.

Ah thanks! I was wondering why my upload speed was so high but my download wasn't. I opened the ports and things are MUCH faster now!

another good bittorrent client is shareaza... http://www.shareaza.com

basically a kazaa, but no spyware, and it searches 3 networks simultaneously as well as downloading from all 3.. so 3x the speed it also doubles as a bittorrent manager, so you can combine all your downloads into one program, vs. 50 torrent windows open.. and you can tweak the upload/download.. so you dont have to share. (dont do this, its bad )
