shocks to lift a 4runner?
i know this isnt true (that i know of) but my neighbor wants to lift his runner and kragens(auto store) said that if he bought rancho 9000 they would give 2-3 " of lift over stock and if he bought the 5000 they would give 1-2" over stock...i know they are bsing with him...ranch doesnt make a lift shock or whatever the hell u call it do they?

maybe those shocks will adapt to that much lift already in place?
If he wants a shock to give the rear end lift, he's going to have to buy a set of air shocks. I have a set from car quest and I did a LOT of looking trying to find a set of air shocks to fit my '90. Carquest was the ONLY autoparts store that could find any.

shocks compress and what holds them up is the coil or leaf spring..you can lift it with a longer coil spring and the shocks will not be able to compress as much but, you lose some travel while doing that. Rancho shocks are needed for lifts so you get more travel and flex.

I replaced my spent shocks with some gas shocks when I first bought my runner and they did lift the rear end about 1/2" but there is no way you can get more than 3/4" for just replacing shocks from my experience

what if the bottom of the front shock was longer than stock? It would put the spring higher then normal right. With that the ranchos are not longer and people should not ask questions at auto parts stores, they should ask them here

They are not meant to support a load at all, just dampen spring compression and rebound.EDIT: I was referring to regular shocks, not strut/coilover type suspension, with that type, theoretically you could get a lift by adjusting where the spring seats relative to the original strut, ie. spacers etc.

You can make the front strut unit considerably longer and the bumps stops are still the limit on compression. I have 11" of front wheel travel. Lately the tires rub pretty good on full stuff on the wells though.
