Stock ' 85 - Is it a waste?

Two quick questions - I recently bought an 85 4runner (w/low miles) for fishing on the beach. The stock height is perfect for my needs so i'm not planning on any mods to the chasis - the truck is bone stock - so my quesitons are?

1. Does IFS handle a little smoother?
2. Should I sell my '85 and get one with IFS

ill trade u my 87 ifs for urs =)

ifs handles better on road and is smoother, but a straight axle is much better for offroad use.

others know way more about this than i do so ill let them tell u more

How low are the miles, and if you don't mind sharing, what was the price??? Most consider the 85 to the best in many ways, last year of solid front axle & first year of EFI, sounds like you got a winner.

"Where are you located?"

I'm in Frederick - As far as miles it just turned 63K today - From the posts I've read and the pictures of other runners I think my trucks ONLY option was power steering & AC

How About a 92 pickup? Of course I would need to put the motor back together. But I'm just on the other side of the mountain from you.

Sorry I wasn't. Hard to convey the sarcasm of me having to rebuild the motor again 2nd time. Its got 220k on it but this rebuilt motor is being well... rebuilt again. I'll ask a friend of mine, for ya though. If I was you I would either keep it or sell it outright, lots of guy's would kill to have a SA Runner with low miles on it.

i really don't think they ride much differently stock vs stock. if you're fishing on the beach i don't think the sand's going to jolt you around too much anyway

Only real problem with handling on the stock '85s is the springs have likely sagged to the point you only have an inch or so of uptravel before bottoming out. So on a smooth road it is not too bad, but hit a small bump and it is jarring. A good option is a set of 2" OME springs and shocks on all 4 corners. 2" of lift is not much, but the ride and handling will be great. My '85 rode and handled very nice with gas shocks and a 3.5" lift after I first lifted it.
