1st Gen 4Runner Seat Swap

I want to replace my 4runner buckets with some new 4Runner seats.

Will 2nd Gen seats fit???

How about 3rd Gen Seats?

Would these seats be able to slide far enough forward to allow passengers in the back.

Thanks -Seth

SteveO just had a similar question on the board. There was a something of an agreement that a 89-? sport seat was the best. Happy hunting.

Best years for seats that I've personally seen were 87-89 4Runner SR5's. All of the 89+ SR5 seats that I've been in or owned haven't seemed as "thick" as the later model gen-1 seats. I bought a set from a yard in 95 that have been in 4 trucks now - I like them that much.

Not sure what the difference is between the years - may just be psychological - but I like these seats!

agreed seats from an 89 are by far some of the most comfortable car seats ive ever sat in. the 3rd gen SR5 seats are really short and arent comfortable even for me and im not of large stature

I put my '89 sr5 seats in my '85 4runner, but on the drivers side I used the seat bracket/frame, out of my '85 ext. cab sr5 p.u.(switched upholstery) the p.u. mounting allows the seat to slide back approx. 2" more.

something I thought maybe you taller guys might like to know

I agree the '89 seats are the most comfy I've had, the '85's were the same I think, they just had 100,000 more miles on them so they were broke down more.

Awesome that's what I wanted to know. I have 89 seats in my 89, and I like me' but they are torn up. I just rode in 3rd gen seats all the way to Vegas and back and I'm not too impressed.

If anyone has some 87-89 seats that are greay and in good shape, shoot me an email, otherwise I'll be hunting for em.

I want 4runner seats so that they will slide forward the same and have that foot release for the passengers. Would pickup seats have that as well as fit in the stock location of a 4runner?

If they do, what kind of shape are they in?

Thanks-Seth

The drivers would be the same but the passenger's wouldn't. you could seperate the cushion/upolstry from the frames and use your 4Runner frames, that would work. Shape wise, I think they're in pretty good. I haven't looked at them for about 6 months, and I'd have to dig them up... I'll try that this weekend and PM you about them, hopefully with some pics!

How hard would it be to swap the cushion from the frame?

Send pics if you can. Thanks -Seth

Seth,

What are you planning to do with the seats you have now? My passenger seat recline is broken and the distance adjustment on my driver side is broken too.

I definitely need to wait until after the holidays. Maybe late January. I might need those parts on my seats, but if I don't I'll let ya know.

Cool

I pulled a pair of "5-way" adjustable seats out of an 88 runner in a junk yard, and bolted em' into my 85. MAJOR improvement from the "1-way adjustable" P.O.S. ripped-up flat stock seats I had in there.
Cost a pretty penny too ($150.00...but hey, even my girlfriend loves em!)
But I searched for two+ years before I found these. I got lucky, whoever owned them aparrently had seatcovers on em' the whole time.

It's not hard to swap cushions, only took me an hour to do both seats, then just go to an upholstery shop and have them hog ringed together again.
