This may sound like a newbie question, but just what would you be decompressing by driving backwards, in 4 wheel drive?

If im not mistaking i believe he is talkin about disengaging 4wd. Sometimes you just need to go into reverse a few times to fully disengage 4wd.

No. The earlier toyotas had auto hubs which is different from the newer ADD hubs. Auto hubs require you to back up to disengage the hubs. This does the same thing as when you turn the dial and disengage a manual hub. With ADD you don't have to reverse, just shift back into 2wd at any speed up to 50 mph.
