Question Should I buy headers with no fuel mods?

I'm starting to dream about TRD headers and want some opinions of their actual effectiveness especially considering I don't have any fuel mods.

I lost some performance with the 285s and want to get it back if possible.

Lay your opinions on me please.

You will be far better off to regear than to put on headers and try and gain performance back. Trust me, I have done both. Headers will only "restore" your lost performance in a narrow power band (maybe a 1K+ RPM range), but proper gearing will be felt all through the band.

My vote is for a regear, then look into headers down the road.

But he is supercharged.. So his gains will be a little more because of that. However, I wouldn't add any more "performance" mods without first doing the URD kit.

Oh yeah, supercharged...that can change things a bit.

Still, I vote regear.

I have the TRD headers and cat-back in the hopes of having a supercharger some day. Exhaust first, then supercharger!

I put 285s on my truck before i did this and after putting both headers and cat on I didn't feel much of a gain, it's there but not enought to compensate for the larger tires.

I agree with regearing but since you have the s/c i would get the headers so you can puch more of the junk out that the super charger is pushing in.

Thanks Folks! Since I've got the sport package I already have the 4.88 rear. What should I change it to?

Wow, I didn't know 4.88's were available stock. I thought 4.30 was maximum.

Let me know if those 4.88's ever go up for sale. I drive through Boone quite a bit during the winter on my way to Sugar & Beech to ski.

I disagree-I started with headers (Downey) and a cat back system, then S/C and have not regeared. I noticed a big difference in the powerband with my new exhaust system. I already had it when I installed the S/C so I don't know how much it helped that but with greater air in there must be more going out to realize full potential. One big power difference between Tacomas and Runners is the exhaust. Go with headers and a better exhaust system, then regear if so desired.....

Obviously I got the ratio wrong Let's go with the 4.10. Still . . . same question, what should I regear to? I've got the trd cat-back and so emil's comment makes sense to me.

Thanks for the kind flaming
