Will a 1997 4Runner rear diff fit in a 1994???

I was wondering if anyone has swapped a rear diff from a 3rd gen into a 2nd or if it was possible without much modification? I was at the salvage yard the other day a saw one under a 1997 and it had the electric locker and so a light bulb came on.
It would probably be cheaper and easier to add an ARB, right?

This has been done and documented a lot of times. A search will bring tons of hits. Try "e-locker" or "retrofit e-locker".

Here's one that might prove most helpful:

Basically... you could either swap the entire axle, but the '97 is wider so most people dont do that, or just swap the 3rd. The article I posted the link to above contained 2 or 3 links to very informative write-ups on how to swap the 3rd.

Here's a pretty good link for the e-locker swap: http://67.122.16.97/carterman/4runner/mods/locker/
