Recently purchased a 97 4-Runner with 5-speed and 4-cyl engine. It was exactly what I was looking for, but was hard to find. I changed the oil and oil filter last night and noticed that the oil filter was very small, even though there is plenty of room for a taller one. Years ago on another truck of mine a mechanice turned me on to the fact that there was a taller/longer model of oil filter that would fit and would provide greater capacity, but most of all make it easier to change because there was more room to get an oil filter wrench on it. He knew right of the top of his head which one would work and gave me the part number. It worked out great. Does anyone know if this is possible with this 97 4-cyl engine. I suspect that a number of other filters for other Toyota engines are of the same thread, but taller in the can. I just don't know where to cross reference something like this. It will add a little capacity and filtering surface, but the main benefit I am looking for is an easier oil change. Also, does anyone know of a good, honest, reliable Toyota mechanic inthe west Houston, TX area.

i know what you talking about, the guy who i bought the truck from was using a bigger filter. Ill try to find the fram part # when i get home, not sure if it will be the same for your year.
