Hey guys / gals, my 4runner has been acting up lately and I believe it may be a clogged fuel filter. (Car stalls when not on the throttle) Unfortunately, I don't have a garage nor the time to replace this myself.

Grossinger City Toyota is only a few blocks from me, but I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good (and possibly cheap) shops or dealerships that could take a look at my truck.

Don't go to grossinger. The guy seemed nice. I had a clicking noise coming from the fornt. He looked at comes back 10 min later and tells me I have a torn cv, and its not covered under warranty. He tells me its going to be $400 to get it fixed. When I told him no thanks, he then charged me $55 labor to diagnose the torn cv.

There is another private mechanic I used to go to up there. Hes a 45 min drive south of the city. He owns a 3rd gen runner, and used to own a 1st gen. So he knows a lot about our trucks, and cars in general. He did a lot of the work on my truck. Also labor is cheaper outside the city. If you I can look up his number for you.

 

If you live north, there is a independant shop in Wilmette that does Toyota and Honda only. They are on Greenbay Rd. just south of Wilmette ave. I'll look for the name for ya.

I've had awesome results working with Euro Auto Plex @ 1533 N Ashland in the city. The owner John Rek has really good guys working there and is very, very fair on pricing. However... (you knew this was coming) unless he's in a great mood he'll say he doesn't take Japanese vehicles. Nevermind the two Evo's & two STi's in the garage... Stop by on a Sat AM and ask for him directly and you'll have good results.

OR, call RiteWay on Daemon Ave, just south of Irving Park Rd. Great guys, very resourcefull and they also have a craftsman-type-dude who does the most awesome allignments.

OR, bring it by my house/garage...

 

since I got you chicago guys here .... come wheeling with me ... first weekend in october (2nd that saterday) Its only an hour and 45 min drive out of chicago. There already a few guys from Indiana going. Theres still a couple of stock guys, so you should fit right in. There is a thread in the off road section here title "badlands"

Fuel filter is 45 minutes max to change, all you need to buy is a set of line wrenches from Home Depot (~$25) and a new fuel filter. If you have stalling problems I would try cleaning your MAF and TB first, though.

 

Hey Milan, thanks for the suggestion. I actually had this exact same problem awhile back and I ended up cleaning the maf sensor (with isopropyl alcohol) and the tb (with carb cleaner); however, this was only 10k miles ago. Do you think it could be the same issues? I guess it wouldn't hurt to try cleaning them again.

Also, the fuel filter is right underneath the driver's side, correct? It's definately overdue for a change, given that it has never been replaced and my runner has a hair under 80k now.
