Question Buying used 4Run, opinions wanted!!!

I might have to change my sig....

I have been looking at 4Runners since I was 15, and I have recently thought about getting a new '04-'05. But I also have alerts set up for 3rd gens, and I caught one....now should I pull the trigger?

It's a 2000 SR5 Sport 4x2 (yeah, yeah - I know) but it does have a locker.
A 2002 4x4 had 10K more miles and was $5,000 more. Anyways this one is Black, grey int, sunroof, 32K miles for only $19,000. Looks real nice. Purdy.

I'm gonna run a Carfax....

Believe it or not, after almost 10 years I am getting tired of my '95 Jeep that doesn't have A/C down here in Florida Yes, I might miss 4x4, but then again I haven't used it in 3 years. I kind of learned that going off road was too expensive and habit forming (ok FUN) a while back. I am at the point now where I'd rather tow fourwheelers and boats, instead of putting 4 foot scratches down my expensive sheet metal. Gone are the days I've spent 6 hours detailing my car Thursday only to drop in in a mud hole Friday. I realized I could get a older 4Runner now than keep saving forever for a new one. And with the money I am saving I can add to my boat fund!

Also, what are yall's opinion of Carmax? So far it's been pretty good!

Thanks for any help/opinions. Hopefully I'll finally be joining the family!!

I'm sorry - didn't know. I even searched last night on "carfax" and didn't see anything. Been registered reader for a long time too. Must be in that FAQ thingy.

Anyways, for what it's worth - I got the info I needed.
For breaking the rules, I'm donate some money to Yotatech...

A 4X2 4Runner with a locker? Never heard of that. You sure?

Well, it's a 2000 Sport with Traction Control and they didn't get that brake modulating Trac Control till 2001. Someone else told me that the old Sports' had locking diffs

I could be wrong...anyone know for sure?

I really don't think so, unless it was some crazy option put on by Toyota.

Check for the "RR Diff Lock" switch to the left of the steering wheel.

Or just wait a couple of weeks and buy Brian's '00 SR5 4WD w/ 60k for $19k...

It has a 100k mile TRANSFERABLE BUMPER-TO-BUMPER warranty

His screen name is waskillywabbit... It's a sweet runner w/ leather, auto trans, etc. Only thing it DOESN'T have is sunroof. All black w/ black bumpers, grill, and black pearl emblems and new Dueler M/T tires...

just trying to help a buddy out...

I think you can find a 00 4x4 for around that same price. I was checking one out in NY (www.sunrisetoyota.com) that is a 2000, 36K and $19,000, 4x4. All black, sunroof, hitch, etc. Sure its in New York, but that makes for a good get to know your new truck sorta road trip.

Did you mean carfax or carmax?
Two weeks ago I got a blue 2002 sport 4x4 at a carmax in Laurel, Maryland. (I need to post my pics....) Carmax was AWESOME. Great place to get a car. Straightforward, great selection, honest pricing. No games with financing, trade in values, etc. Cool all around.

Carfax is decent. It will cost you about $30 for an unlimited # of checks inside of 30days. $30 isn't much compared to a lemon, so i'd say its worth it from that point of view.
Problems? Yes. Carfax only has data that is reported to them. Some states are different and give out different info. For example, if you are in a wreck in some states but don't turn it in to your insurance (you work something out on your own), the police don't have to report that to carfax. Sure this is probably for the smaller fender benders, but its still a problem.
You also can't tell how rough a person was on it from carfax.

Inspect the tires--a 2000 with only 32K should have the original shoes, and that should give you a lot of info about the care the PO took. Were they rotated, are they damaged/curb checked.

You should check out Toyota's certified warranty. Its only good for 6yrs or 60K. Unfortunately for a 2000 the 6years will be up quickly, but the warranty is pretty comprehensive.
