Old Oil Filters, Part # 90915-20001

I just picked up a 2002 Tacoma with the 2.7 engine.

My dad had some old Toyota oil filters from his late 80's truck. The part number is 90915-20001, and the box says its for 22R series engines. I've checked some manufacturers' sites and it seems like all 4 cylinder Toyota trucks use the same filter. Is it safe to use these 15+ year old filters on my truck? The filters still have the plastic wrap around the sealing surface and the gasket appears to be pliable.

toyota has a tendancy to not change things if they work. My buddies has a 2003 mr2 and an 85 mr2. both use the same pluges , same filter , same alternator same starter so I would be suprised if it would work. Though I wouldn't use that filter anyway. the rubber might be fine what about the paper element inside. Too big a risk for a what 6 dollor or less filter

As I said in the original message, the gasket was still soft and pliable. I cut open one of the filters and the rubber anti-drain valve was also pliable but the paper filtering element didn't look too good. It seemed a bit brittle. I think my dad bought the filters in '85 when he got his first Toyota truck.

I guess I'll go buy new filters.
