k&n fipk, loud mas sound at idle on 2nd gen

i have a 95 4runner with 59,000 miles on it and just put a fipk (cone filter from k&n) and now there is a loud chattering noise coming from the mas. does anyone know if this is common? or if there is a fix? its almost bad enough that the performance might not be worth it.

Chattering? Mine makes a nice "sucking" sound at idle and roars when you get on it. It's noisy - this is normal. Not sure about a "chatter" though.

I know what sound your talking about. Mine does the same thing. It's pretty noisy. As far as a problem it's normal. Mine did it stock too just not nearly as loud.

My '94 makes the same noise. I started hearing it after doing the airbox mod with the K&N filter.

i hear the sucking and i like the roar, but this is different and sounds like crap, it sounds like mettle on mettle and chattering is the only way i can describe it. its almost embarrasing at a light, its "dude fix your engine" bad.

Can you record it somehow? Are you sure it's not the 3.0's noisy injectors or valves?

i am 100 percent sure its not the injectors, valves, or lifters (which might i add are noisy as well). im fairly good with cars and this stumps me, its the vfm (mafs or whatever its called on the 3.0), ill see what i can do about a recording.

on the new cougar the intakes made a similar noise so ford designed a fanned plate to insert that spun the air and made it quieter. im wondering if this might help.

no better gas milage, well maybe half a mpg but its basically a good increase in low end power and throttle response. mine was 200 and the install is too easy!

I've traced the sound down to the reed valve. If you put your hand on it with the vehicle running, you will feel it click when you hear the noise. If I remember correctly, there is a tube that runs from the reed valve to one of those other black boxes by the air intake.

I think it's normal. I only hear mine as the rpms drop after I rev it up. Even then it's only for about a second at most.

Had the same problem

I had the same problem when I installed my cold air intake. To solve the problem you have to fab the top part of the resonator box back in the setup.

I think this is normal. Someone I know was selling there FIPK a year ago and I tried it. The thing was only on for about 4 hrs. WAY too loud so I took it out and gave it back. My wife was like WTF is wrong with the engine. Kind of sounded like the intake on an air compressor.
