[Colorado] - Middle St. Vrain/Coney (6/26)

Well, just decided today that we are goign to join a couple of guys (jeeps) on colorado 4x4 forum that are running Middle St. Vrain / Coney Flats Trail on saturday - 6/26. Wanted to see if any of the yota crowd wanted to join aswell.

I havn't been wheeling yet this summer - so I thought this might be a good "warm-up" trail.

I think they are meeting between 10 & 10:30 at the Middle St. Vrain trailhead. Let me know if anyone else is up for it.

In case any of you are wondering about the trail... here's a few pics in this thread so you can see how deep the water crossing is and a few trail pics.

Dave,

I see in your sig. that you are on co4x4 - so here's the link to the original thread for this event - has a few more details than I posted here. Hopefully we'll see you up there.

We will try to be there around 10-10:30 But dont wait up.
Will be on CB ch-4 on the way to the trailhead.
Coming from the Springs we might be running behind who knows with the roads and weather, traffic etc. I figure it will take close to 2 hours just to drive to the trail from the Springs. Thanks Doug & Darcie

Doug - It will be nice to see you again! I don't think when we met last time that Darcie was with you so it will be nice to meet her aswell. By the way, I think the guys on th co 4x4 forum that are heading this up said they would be on channel 13. Just FYI - I'll monitor 4 and 13.

that's a pretty fun trail, ive run middle st. vrain several times and the coney flats loop from camp dick as well, great trail.

i heard from a buddy that a 4x4 club recently did some "trail maintenance" near camp dick, creating an obstacle as a "warning" to fullsize vehicles or vehicles without adequate trail armour, essentially a "turn back now if this is too rough" point near camp dick. i also heard that this new obstacle is apparently the hardest on the trail.

i was able to run the middle st vrain trail to the hiking trailhead in a stock tundra, and run the coney flats loop from camp dick (ie backwards) with only a moderate suspension upgrade, slightly larger tires and a decent skid plate (er, and a rear diff breather extension...). i suspect that, provided erosion hasnt gotten completely out of control, and new obstacle aside, that a stock tundra with a couple skid plates could complete the entire loop from camp dick. the new obstacle is apparently highly likely to cause body damage to a larger vehicle.

anyone, any input or information?

thanks,
sean

Sean,

You are correct. The FS installed a obstacle at the beginning of the trail to "illustrate" what to expect on the trail. On the following link, there are a few pictures of this new obstacle... http://www.colorado4x4.org/ubb/ultim...;f=11;t=000956
