I have been checking out the sport edition skid plate for my 4runner. My question is where does it mount to? I need to know cause I have a 98 but have a 99+ style bumper. If it mounts to the bumper assembly I believe I need to the the actual 4runner one, but if it mounts somewhere else I might be able to get the Taco one. Thanks for viewing!

It mounts to the tow hooks. You just unbolt the hooks, mount the brackets for the skid plate back up to the tow hooks. Then bolt the skid plate to the mount plates. I have one on my Taco, and I know it's the same for the 4Runner. Sorry, but I'm not sure on the 4Runner fit. There might a slight difference due to the bumper change in 99...

 

It mounts to the tow hooks, but you have to reverse the brackets to make it fit a 4Runner. You'll only have two of four bolts attaching the skidplate to the bracket, but it is solid as a rock anyway. My website has a pic or two.

Yeap, exactly same thing on 4Runner. Just unbolt tow hooks, mount brackets with skid plate, bolt tow hooks back.

4runnerfever, i noticed what you have on your rig and mines gonna seem like a copy in a way. I want the 01 tails and we both have the new hood. I hope to get the OME lift though and I cant decide on 285s or 265s. Im going for looks on the lift so im trying to keep that in mind.

 

yea, I'm in it mostly for fun and for looks. I went with the Revtek lift for that reason. It was a straight forward install and the 285's only rub if you've got the thing fully locked in a tight turn. They really don't rub enough to do any damage.

Thanks! Yeah I hope to do the lift and get Mickey Thompson classic II's as well. How does your revtek kit ride? The only reason hadnt planned on going that route was that Ive heard the OME setup rides great and I really want that.

 

I was planning on buying one of these skid plates as well.

Does it come with the mounts, or do you have to buy them seperately? Will this skid plate work on a 96?

 

If you still have the stock front bumper just get one of the Tacoma skid plates off of eBay, it bolts right on. Comes with brackets and bolts. Like stated earlier, just unbolt your tow hooks on the front, the brackets go on under the tow hooks and then the skid plate attaches to the brackets with the 4 bolts provided. That is what I have on the front of my 96.

 

i want one really bad, but:
a) do not have the money at the moment for a visual accessory
b) am unsure of how it will fit with regards to my brush guard...

 

In my opinion, dbikeman, the Revtek lift rides the same as stock. It did not improve things, but it did not make it worse.

SO are you guys saying the tacoma skid plate will fit with a few easy mods?? BTW I have a 2001 runner sport ed. I see quite a few of them on ebay but none are ever for the runner.

Your rig's "anthracite", right? I had a '97 like that. I miss that color. It is by far the best production color for a vehicle that I have ever seen. Sweet ride.

Tman, the tacoma skid only works with 96-98 4runners. For your 01 you will more than likely need the actual 4runner skid.

Yeah, I remember that being a bit of an issue. I've got a 2002 SE that's sunfire red and it seems to not be all that forgiving with dirt, either.

do you guys know where I can get a 2001 aluminum skid plate?

how much do they run?

my 1999 has a two piece skid plate. one right behind the radiator and one
that protects the front diff. will the 2001 skid plate cover all of it?
or just the front most area?

Just the front most area, ends at your first existing one right behind the radiator.
