Stupid Question #4876213

What the hell is a Hilux??? Is it just a 2nd Gen 4runner.....Is it a 4 door Pickup? I seem to be getting conflicting information.

Also what is a surf??

Oh yeah and what is up with these 1st gen pickups with a big fiberglass box between the bed and cab? Is this an aftermarket crewcab or a dealer option?

Thanks for the info -Seth

Yeah, what they said.

The Hilux is the Pickup overseas, and the Hilux Surf is the 4runner overseas.

runner,
the meaning is HI = high and Lux = luxury ,a high luxury vehicle
as for the surf end I've lived in Japan for 20 years and still haven't got an answer on that.
Near as I can tell the bigggest difference in the trucks other than the name is the engine sizes.
Mine for example is an 88 Hilux surf ssr limited, the motor is 2000cc's known as a 3y the tranny and drive are the same as the state side version. oh and the steering wheel
These cats come up with some crazy names for vehicles like a suzuki scrum thats just one that came to mind there are countless others that make you wonder what these guys are thinking
Later

A lot of Jappie commercial adds show the 4runner with some kind of surfing environment with surf board on top.. maybe that's why? I dont think the yotatech ppl would agree with the fact that 4runner is built for surfing... im just bein stupid BTW.

I consider my 1995 pre-tacoma pickup a Hilux. Every where accept US calls it a Hilux. In the US they either call it a pickup or a SR5 pickup.

A Surf is a 4runner in Japan and some othe foreign markets.

The fiberglass 1/4 cap is a sleeper. Designed for a person to slip through the rear truck window and lie down in. Very convient on long trips or camping. It's an after market product.
