Not a pic of my 4Runner, but how do I remove this circled chrome trim piece from the tailgate without breaking it?! I've attempted a while back on my old parts 2nd gen, but just broke the whole thing. I can't break this one taking it off and I don't know exactly where to pull to take it off without snapping the clips/tabs holding it on on the back.

I believe you are right. Was poking around the tailgate of my parts 4Runner and it seems there are tabs on the back inside the tailgate. For sure a weird way to secure it, but that's what it seems! Haven't went further, but we'll find out!

 

The rear hatch interior panel can't be too hard to remove. While it's off. New bulbs? Clean and ;lube all mechanisms. Check for rust and treat. I find as I age when I do one job I end up ensuring anything else that might be a problem later is looked at maintained. My 1-1/2 hour jobs end up being 3 hours. Good luck
