LC guys willing to give good advice to a friend via email

Hey guys,

One of my good friends just bought a used 97 LX450 for his wife. He's a car NUT. He used to work for Ford SVT and at the GM Proving grounds so no doubt he's gonna build up his honey's LX.

Anyways, I've invited him here to our wonderful forum but he likes to correspond by email too.

Are any of you LC experts available and open to personally communicating with him? Specifically, his first question to me was "which driving lights?" but then I started with "do you have a grill guard? and if so, think about replacing that w/ an ARB or TJM!"

I'm more familiar w/ the 4runners (obviously), so any of you who know alot about which suspension parts, bumpers, sliders, etc for the LC/LX, could you please respond in this thread?

Thanks,
Bob

Bob, have him go here. Anything listed for an FJ-80 applies to his LX (I think). If he really wants an wheelin' machine, though, he should look into a L/C with the optional factory FF/RR lockers, unavailable in the LX. I read a thread about converting an LX to lockers, but it was thought to be cost prohibitive compared to just finding a locked L/C.

I'm busy with a new project or would offer to email, but am strapped for time.

My LX has factory Lockers. I think in 98 they got rid of them or something like that.

That web site BT17R pointed out is by far the best Land Cruiser site on the web. People are cool and will answer even the dumbest questions. Like many I have asked.

I'd like to get YT Land Cruiser post near that but they have all of the SOR archives on IH8MUD. So I guess we'll have to settle for a runner up on this one.

I stand corrected! Yours is the first I've seen with the option. Hmm, maybe time to look around for a locked '97 LX to replace my '96 locked L/C when it sells.

Did yours develop the leaking head gasket problem, or was that cured in the '97's? Mine leaked and Toyota stepped up and installed a factory new engine at 80K. It never became a TSB or recall, maybe they figured it was cheaper and better PR to replace those random rigs that failed.

I am learning about the 80 series myself. I have read up quite a bit on them and am looking to mod that ride too. Initially swapping out the springs for OME and shocks. Maybe a bumper, winch, sliders and the list will go on.

I may not be able to offer much advice, but what I do know about, I'd be willing to share and help him out if I can.

My email addy is: Mootispaw@aol.com

Tell him to feel free to shoot me over an email.

BT17R:
Don't sell the LC and replace it with an LX. I hate driving that thing around with the Lexus badges on it. A bunch of people including truckers and brokers see me driving the Lexus respond with..."Wow, business must be good! You're sporting a Lexus."

I hate that and seriously have been thinking about removing the badges. I usually respond with "Hey it's just a Land Cruiser with pretty stickers on it. My 4Runner cost me twice as much!"

I haven't had any problems with the head gasket, yet. (knock on wood) But that is sweet that Toyota hooked you up.

Ditto! I hate the Lexus badges and these people thinks I'm a millionaire. I always get this question over and over, " you must be rich?" I said no, it is just a Land Cruiser in a sheep's clothing.

Noel: I'm right with you on that Badge thing. In fact I dislike it so much that when my daughter asks me which vehicle we're taking I refer to it as the Cruiser!

Bob: "The good one", I hope you're referring to I8MUD, right? That board is tremendous. Not quite YT, but close!
