anyone want to help me get 1980 running? hacked wiring i was wondering what the basics are for the ignition wiring or a good diagram
4x4
Edit: I need full color coded wiring diagrams for a 1980 Toyota pickup 4x4 if anyone has that please message me
Well more info would help, are you talking under the dash? Engine bay wiring? Have any pics of the hack job? What isn’t working? Etc etc etc.
Thank you. Yes under the dash which wires control ignition on , acc and starter. Also those wires in the engine bay. No crank, no ignition at all just switches. I have this from AutoZone so I guess I'll start by chasing the wires from the battery to see where they are going. I'll get some pictures tomorrow.

Hotwired ignition for spark. Have spark. No fire still, opinions on this? Tooth off? First mark on cover Cam pulley at first mark on cover When the cam pulley is at 0
Are you sure you're actually on Top Dead Center (TDC) for #1 cylinder? I ask this because with the cam gear "dot" on top like that, there should also be a "bright link" on the timing chain that lines up with that dot. I see no bright link here.
It should look like this:
In any case, with the "dot" at the top as you've shown, check the rocker arms on cylinder #1. If it's actually at TDC for cylinder #1, both rocker arms should have some slight play in them. and the rocker arms on #4 should be tight (no play).

Not sure what I'm seeing with those crank pulley timing marks. Is that what it looks like with the cam gear "dot" straight up? if so the engine is too far advanced. That shows as base timing set at 15 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). The base timing spec for the 20R is 8 BTDC. That would be the mark just to the left of the "5". The two mark left of the "*" mark are 12 and 15 degrees BTDC, respectively.
It's also possible that the distributor was incorrectly installed too far advanced and that why it looks like that.
Very good video on correct distributor installation here:
If it were me I wouldn't trust the way it came, and just base-line everything according to spec, then go from there.
Here's a link to a PDF version of the 1978 Pickup wiring diagram. I would assume that the 1980 is similar and not too much different, especially with wire colors on standard items like ignition.

Thanks for the links. I am sure it's tdc. Whoever installed it didn't care about that link or it just is out of rotation. At the 8 before tdc the cam tooth was one tooth off imo. I moved it. I also discovered while it does have spark it is very weak. Inside the distributor cap I found a small screw as the contact I'm thinking that's not how it's supposed to be so I'm grabbing a cap today.
Edit: new distributor cap still no spark out of it. Spark into it, not the strongest but it's consistent. Weak coil replaced still no start. New plug wires. Burned up valves and blown head gasket causing no compression.
