Searching For: Black Front Grille + Turn Signals for 4Runner That Actually Fit
Hello,
I have a 1986 4Runner DLX. Bought it already partially restored and have been finishing it. The prior owner installed a cheap matte black front grill and front turn signals and it does not fit the truck correctly. I have purchased multiple black aftermarket eBay grilles, some relatively expensive, but none of them fit correctly.
Does anyone know where I can find a black front grill and front turn signal set that actually fits the truck like OEM? OR do I need to buy the OEM chrome version and paint it black?
Thanks!
Franklin

I don't think any of the oem grilles are available. My oem grille and headlight doors(bezels) were pretty worn, and I got a new one like you. The weight was literally half the oem, and getting it to fit properly took some work. I too was unimpressed with the quality and kept my oem grille for later restoration.
These parts typically come from Taiwan, and their quality control is non exsistant. I'd use for now, but source an oem one from a wrecking yard down the road. On the corner lights(clearance) if they are oem they'll have either KOITO or IKI molded into the lens itself. If those clearance lights are oem you stand a decent chance the grille and headlight doors are, too.

Not oem, not even close.
Shoot, look closer. It even has "Taiwan" molded in.
Different vendors will often buy something from the same aftermarket source, then customize it and resell.
In this case, a vendor bought a bunch of aftermarket grilles, sprayed them black, and resold.
There are no new grilles available that are oem. Period. EPC-data.com might let you place an order, but in a few days you'll get an email saying they can't get.

Im running this one. My front end had some damage so I cannot comment on fitting 100%. It did fit well on my drivers side that wasn't previously repaired. My aftermarket fenders don't fit nearly as well

The quality of aftermarket parts for the 1980-2000 Toyotas was just atrocious. Fit and finish was a constant problem. Body shops would frequently send several aftermarket parts back before they found one they could work with. Even to this day the it's very difficult to prep an aftermarket bumper cover that allows paint to stick. If you see a Toyota car with the bumper paint cracked and peeling you can be pretty positive it's not original.

I generally find the issue with paint not sticking to replacement plastic bumpers is more to do with prep or lack there of.
I've yet to find a stainless, aluminum, chrome or plastic part that has adhesion issues if I thoroughly clean/degrease, rough up/sand, re clean and then apply adhesion promotor before l prime. After that she's ready to paint or coat.
Body shops these days don't exactly specialize in quality since insurance fender benders is usually what keeps them going.
Proper fitment is another issue.
