Hello, I have noticed recently an old weld at my truck chassis.. it is at the front adjacent to the left wheel.. please advise if it is okay at this point and normal or I should consider doing something against it. I don't know the history of it. Someone told me that this is a manufacturer weld.. although the weld looks perfectly welded I think it is a TIG weld I would like to reconfirm it..also I am thinking of painting the whole frame to project it from corrosion if anyone can give an advice about the paint product to be used
Skilled welder. Not easy to do on a vertical surface. I don't see anything of concern. but if you want to make sure....
1) The easy way. Get an alignment. If something isn't lined up correctly that'll show it. Just doesn't pinpoint the cause if it’s unalignable.
2) the hard way. The FSM has measurements between multiple points on the chassis/frame. Very precise, but not easy to do unless you have everything off the frame.
Can't comment on the weld, but something I notice.
Not sure if it is the way you are parked but the lower control arm on that side is just about to hit the bump stop mount and a majority of the bump stop is missing. Almost like the torsion bars are worn out or need tightening.
Thank.you Andy. or.your reply. Could you please help me.and show me what do you mean by the majority of mount is missing and if you can indicate for me and highlight it on the picture for both bump stop mount and which torsion bar should be tightened. I am a mechanic expert that's why asking ..
.thanks a lotttt
in the pic above, shows a normal rubber bump stop with a gap of approx 1in + between the control arm and the bottom of the bump stop.
On yours the majority of the rubber bump stop is missing and if it were there the control arm would be touching or even compressing the bump stop. Almost like the front end has sagged over the years.. There should be a gap between the bottom of the bump stop and the control arm to allow for upward travel of the suspension.
Things i would check would be the control arm bushings for any excess wear, ball joints and replace if necessary. If all that looks good tighten up the torsion bars to achieve the proper ride height and replace the rubber bump stops. There are good instructions in the FSM on how to do this. Torsion bars can also wear out over the years and let's face it all of our trucks are now 30+ years old and things wear out.
