4WD not working consistently

1993 4Runner with Auto trans that was replaced recently with a used/rebuilt (don't know which; its my son's car, used to be mine. 280+k miles) 4WD was working, then I went to drive it on hard packed snow and no go. After a few checks, I suspect the linkage due to very sloppy linkage, both on the console and below. So today I checked the vacuum but none, then looked at the linkage and noticed a very slight indentation on the adjustable arm where the nut USED to be... so I loosened it and moved it back 1/4 inch to where the previous stop point was. After a bit of canoodling with the console shift, it started working again but no light comes on. I plan on getting replacement bushings tomorrow

Pivot point (haven't found any diagrams that name this part, not even in Haynes manual

and wondered if I can get the pivot point that extends up into the shifter- that part is really sloppy. Moving the nut on the adjustable arm tightened the slop up quite a bit... so I can hear the click but no light...is there a switch that is dependent on the linkage being tight?

Its been a few days and you've no answer. So I'll waste your time.

My 95 was originally an auto. I don't recall all the shifter bidnez from the auto, however I left the front diff alone, with the ADD system. Your does have ADD?
Anyway, after I built a harness for a 5VZ motor onto a manual trans, my 4wd did not work either. Finally figured out the manual had TWO connectors on detectors. I had got those confused. One is 2-4 the other was HI-LO. I discovered trouble shooting that the 2-4 lever switch (when CLOSED due to 4wd location) actuates a relay under dash, which one can hear switch. That activates the front diff slider actuator thingy. The brown/blue ones over on drinker side fender. One engages, the other vacuum swithc pulls it back off.

Key here is, with ADD, the engine must pull the actuator over (with vacuum), only then does the 4WD active light glow. Its actually a confirmation of activity. So check that. If you have ADD.

Thanks, I will check that system. Might be awhile, another problem developed with 'starts and idles, but no power'...barely makes it up a slight incline. Thinking the Cat is mostly plugged as I banged on it and on revving the engine, it changed and improved slightly. It's the original cat (280K+ miles). I won't be back to my son's place for a month or more.
