1990 4Runner 22RE low oil pressure

Hello, my 4 runner is having low oil pressure issues and is very chattery, no lights indicating low oil pressure, I’ve replaced the the oil pump which helped until the vehicle came up to temp, then it lost pressure again. I’m getting ready to drop the oil pan and check out the bearings, I guess my question before I do that is, will the oil pressure sensor switch, going bad cause the engine to be as chattery noisy as it is? Or does it just throw a false low oil pressure reading? Should I replace the switch?

Is this truck new to you? How many miles? Last time the valves were adjusted? Compression test? I take it you have a factory gauge on the dash, where is the gauge sitting at while at higher RPM’s

If it’s a new oil pump I doubt it’s low oil pressure then. Hook a mechanical gauge up to it and see what it says.

it’s new to me but it’s the old family work horse, has over 340,000 miles. Before oil pump the factory gauge sat at just above the low line, after installing the new one, pressure went up the the first line until the engine came to temp, became noisy again and pressure dropped. I have not put my compression tester on it yet. No clue when the valves were adjusted. My dad drove it daily
for a long time and one morning when he started it up he noticed it had the issue of low pressure and it was chattery. So he took it right home and parked it, now it’s mine to fix.

Have you checked the oil and seen if there’s any glitter in it? When was the last time it and the filter was changed?

For what it’s worth, I had a small block Chevy that when warm would idle around 1-2psi of pressure and jump to 25-30psi at 3500rpm. Rock crawled and drove that thing at 80mph for two years with no issues.

Hook up a mechanical gauge and confirm with that first and go from there.
