1993 22RE 4WD W56 (Oil Pan Gasket Replacement)

Aloha Legends!

I am gearing up to drop my oil pan on my 1993 pickup 22re with an ifs system (independent front suspension) and do a FIPG to stop the very minimal oil leak. I confirmed the original gasket is done for after running oil dye and using a UV light to spot the leak around the whole pan.

Two ways I see myself doing this.... remove the bolts from the motor mounts, grab the hoist, and then lift the engine or drop the diff. I have come to realization that I will be dropping the diff because working around a hoist seems cluttery.

I have inspected and looks to me i should have a pretty smooth operation... problem is that my front diff mounting bolts looks pretty rusty... barely can see the sides of the head of the bolt...

Its a 19mm and I am wondering if I should blast it with an impact gun or breaker bar???

Has anyone did this job before? specifically dropping the diff instead of lifting the engine?

Any thoughts or recommendations are welcomed.

MAHALO

that sounds like a lot of work.

is it only in one small area? you might be able to blast the area with carb cleaner and a toothbrush, then seal it up on the outside with some sort of adhesive.

I have removed the oil pan by dropping the diff. Definitely is do-able. Fairly certain I did not use a impact gun on my diff bolts, I did not have to.

Aloha Cory!

Thanks for the input! Good to know, did you just just a 1/2 drive ratchet and 19mm socket for those diff bolts? Also what's the easier way to apply the fipg before bolting it up?

I seen people clean it all up and then attach the pick up tube first before apply the fipg to the pan and then lifting it up... I almost feel like that would be hard to do but then having to bolt the pick up tube after applying the fipg seems hard as well lol.

Anyways... i gotta do it somehow regardless

Most likely I used a 24" breaker bar and a 1/2" ratchet once they were broken loose.

As for the FIPG, the pickup tube for me, I never unbolted I don't think, just cleaned the screen off and left it bolted to bottom of engine. Fairly certain that I did a thin coat of RTV on the bottom of engine surface (after good cleaning of course) and then a thin coat on the oil pan mating surface. Lift it up into place, and then get it close, line up bolt holes and then get a bolt kindof started while at same time pressing the pan up and seating it. Not going to say it was fun, this is something you'd much rather do on an engine stand with the engine flipped upside down. Mine has not leaked and it has been more than 10 years since I did this.
