92 3.0 VZE Crankshaft help

Questions about removing/ installing crankshaft bolt.
Can putting car in gear to tighten crankshaft bolt damage the engine/timing?
when I removed the crankshaft bolt I put it in 5th to break it loose and am wondering if I can do the same to tighten to torque spec.
I’ve gotten mixed answers as people say it’s fine and others say no, need some clarification thank you

Personally, I have not used the 5th-gear method (I have an auto). Instead, I fabricated a holding tool: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...h-3vze-137934/

Those more knowledgeable than me can comment on the method you used. I would just mention that 181 ft-lbs on the crankshaft could certainly move the truck, even in 5th gear. You took safety precautions to remove the crankshaft bolt, so repeat those when putting it back in.

I’ve done it on other vehicles with no issues. You aren’t applying anywhere close to the same force on the parts as the engine is. Lock it in 5th and put the parking brake on and get to work. Or a dozen ugga duggas on a 1/2” impact.
