1993 4runner 3.slow Won't start, can't shift out of park, no dash lights.

I drove my 93 SR5 automatic to work the other day and it died on my break. I live in the mountains and it was a bad snow storm. I had to drive in 4 wheel high and with the roads being terrible I was only going about 25-35 mph the whole 14 miles. On my break I started it up (fired right up with no problems or hesitation) and tried to put it in Drive. The shifter wouldn't go into drive so I put it back in park. I noticed I still had it in 4wd so I shifted back into 2wd. I tried the shifter again and it wouldn't budge. Then my dash went dead. The rpm gauge dropped to zero but the truck was still running. I turned the key off and went to restart it and it was totally dead. A small wisp of smoke came through the center vent and it smelled like something shorted out or something. The dash is dead and nothing at all happens when I turn the key. It doesn't seem like the dash is getting any power. The headlights work and the lights on the doors work. Still can't move the shifter. Any ideas what it might be? I really don't think it's the starter. Oh, I should mention that I had the transmission replaced last summer.
