Hello guys, my name is Philip, I am new to the site, I have a 1988 Toyota pickup with the 22R in it, I recently replaced the timing advance and can’t get it to idle so I can adjust the timing. It will turn over but won’t run or idle for me to have a chance to set timing.
Good point lol, in retrospect it was a terrible idea…this little pickup has been super reliable its entire life (currently 167k). Recently it started sputtering out to the point of flooding out, if you are really gentle with the throttle it’s not as bad. Started by replacing the carb (new oem aisin), replaced fuel filter, replaced the mechanical fuel pump, then spark plugs…that is what led me to the vacuum advance. Replaced it and it idled very rough, no throttle up and now it won’t even idle to allow me to adjust the timing.
Have you tested the old and new vacuum advance to see if working? Test with a vacuum pump. See FSM. I'm pretty sure a faulty vacuum advance won't keep truck from idling. I ran with a faulty one for a long time....
Make sure vacuum lines are hooked up to correct ports since you've replaced carb. Go to the electronic parts catalog, select your year/make/model/characteristics, save the image for vacuum piping, print it and check vacuum lines. I use a highlighter to mark lines that I've verified to make it easier visually. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f123...atalog-317893/
Are you seeing gas in the sight glass on carb? As I understand it, new aisin carbs are not available from US dealers. Did you order from amayama? Is it a rebuilt carb? Do you still have the original carb? Don't throw it out!
If it's not available in the USA then Amayama can't get either. They may have a price, but if you place an order they'll get back to you in a day or two and let you know it's not available. Been there. prcnctoyo gave some good advice. The one thing you can't rule out, if this is a rebuilt/refurbished unit, they might have set the float wrong. Been there, too, with our samurai.
When you installed the advance did you pull the distributer?
A mechanic friend of mine ordered it and installed it about a year ago, I looked at it recently and it is a new aisin, I will try to find out where he got it from and let you know. It was big $$$ unfortunately but I was hoping it was resolve some cold starting and choke issues but it didn’t. The truck just suddenly started hesitating under 3/4 to full throttle and eventually quit running. I probably should have done more vacuum tests prior to replacing the advance but hindsight is 20/20 right? It came with a new distributor and I put new plugs in…had to end up cleaning carbon off of them during this process though, may have fouled one, so probably put another set in to be safe. Thanks for all the info and links, I am going to try these things over the next couple of days and let you know how it goes…

Please explain. Was it a year ago or recently?
If you recently removed the distributor, and it's not running right, then the distributor might not be installed properly. Happens lots on these engines. Excellent video below on the installation.
Awesome video...THANKS! I will be trying this out most likely later today and I will let you know how it goes. The carb was replaced about a year ago and this problem just arose recently so it is doubtful that it is related to the carb. He didn't give me the old carb back but I am going to text him and ask him if he still has it and try to get it back, maybe one day get some of my $$$ back that I spent on the new one. I do hope this gets it back to idle so I can fine adjust the timing but I figure the root problem will still exist and I'm not really sure what to try next.
Well, if it was a brand new Aisin carb I would agree that an issue with that is unlikely. It’s just getting a new Aisin seemed impossible, or so I thought. If they had to return your old carb for a core than I’d suspect it was reman. And a reman carb could have issues.
Here’s some diagnostic help from the factory manual. One is from the Engine section, the other is fuel section. At least it’ll give you a direction. If you think you’ve narrowed it down post up and we should be able to give you ideas on how to confirm.
Big props to snippits, the video was very simple and to the point, had the truck back starting and idling perfect in like 5 mins. I still have the flood out issue with heavy acceleration.
