How to remove and clean intake 87 22re

All posts on this topic are 100 years old so I figured I should make a new one rather than reply to an old one.

I want to take off and wash my intake, it's filled with black gunk.

Questions:

1. Is there a gasket between the split in the upper and the lower half of the intake pipes? Anyone have a part number?

2. I'd like to avoid taking off the lower half of the intake pipes and just leave them attached to the head because I dont want to mess around with electrical wiring. Could I just spray the lower half with a ton of carb cleaner against closed valves, scrub as best I can and wipe/shop vac out whatever slurry I create in the cleaning process?

3. Best/easiest to install oil catch can?

Thanks.

there is a gasket between the upper & lower plenum. it usually stays intact. i had the upper plenum off #1 maybe 20 times so far, still with whatever gasket was there when i bought it in 2013.

the lower plenum runners don't tend to get very gummed or blackened. i would just use a shop rag or towel to clean, no scrubbing needed.

why the catch can?

To stop more black gunk from getting in there after I clean it all out.

It's been a long time since I did this but, I believe I remember part of the harness still had to be pulled up because it went between the runners.
I removed all the sensors and the plastic parts and sprayed the inside with foaming oven cleaner and rinsed with water many times and it worked pretty well. If you get it on the outside of the plenum it will stain it dark though. I also ran a piece of wire through the EGR port like a plumbing snake because it was pretty much blocked.
I did the lower pretty much like you described.
I think I reused the gasket between the upper and lower.

Yeha im trying to avoid having to disconnect any wiring. If something were to become loose or otherwise damaged and I didnt notice and an electrical problem arose I'd have a hard time fixing or finding it with my limited knowledge. So that's why I wanted to leave the lower portion attached and the wiring undisturbed. Thanks for your reply.
