86 4x4 AUTO trans wires

I was under the truck and saw this connector hanging. I’ve looked and looked and can’t find where it goes. Can’t find any info on the internet either, can someone point me in the right direction please? 4WD dash indication works. Trans does shift weird, I have to shift it manually and it won’t kick down when it’s in D. Thanks.

Well, there is an oil. temp sensor for the auto trans that has a black connector. And black connectors were not common on Toyotas back then. But the wire colors are very wrong. Having two wires both black in the same connector is very untoyota.
I could definitely see an unplugged oil temp sensor affecting shift, and especially overdrive.

Ok, that’s good to know. It does a an oil temp light, but it only comes on key on engine off. I’m going to dig into and try to find the connector on the truck side.

Yeah, coming on when you simply turn the key to “on” is really letting you know the bulb is good.

Do you know what color the wires would be for that sensor on the truck side?

Both green, but one with a black stripe, the other yellow. I’m sure that green has become very dark with age. I’m using a 1987 EWD. The other end of that wiring terminates in the right kick panel.

I found this one, seems to fit the bill. The connector coming out of the trans is boogered up a bit so it’s hard to tell if the match. I’m going to try to plug it in I guess.

I'd feel better about connecting the two if the wires were the same color. If the wire length allows the two to be connected, and properly secured to the underside of the cab, and not be too long or tight than it;s probably ok. You might look to see if there are any nearby connectors that might be plugged in together that might match up with your mix-matched pair, but i didn't see anything else in the 1987 schematic. Toyota didn't tend to use the exact same connector too close to each other, which helps in not accidentally connecting things together incorrectly. wires that have been routed a certain way for a long time tend to fall in that direction on their own if unplugged, and that might offer a clue, too.
