Large bang after timing chain change

So, this is not urgent and mostly a curiosity. It's about an 86 22r that I tried fixing but failed. But now I have a 22re that needs a new head gasket and so I'm reflecting.

About 20 years ago, my 86 needed a new head gasket. I think I sent the head in to get decked and pressure tested.

Anyway, I got it all back together, proudly drove it for several weeks. Seemed fine. I don't drive aggressively.

Well, not long after I was driving up a steep hill, I can't remember if there was a large bump or if I gave a ton of gas to climb the street (Seattle has few doozies) but I heard a very large bag from the engine, and from there it just ran like crap. I limped it home...hazards lights on, driving slowly, engine just sounded and performed terribly.

at that point in my life, I didn't have the time and space to tear into it again. Also didn't have the same internet knowledge base and YouTube, lol.

So I moved on, got a different daily driver and just missed that truck terribly. got my current 91 and out 7 years later.

so, I'm thinking that I didn't have something tight. Hit the gas hard or a bump, and the timing chain skipped a tooth on the cam gear, but I'm wondering what you all think might have happened?

Cheers.
