86 extended cab.. 19 gallon tank retrofit?
I am wanting to stuff a 19 gallon tank in my 86 extended cab pickup. I believe what is in it now is a 14 gallon. I've never been able to get 17 gallons in it. I figure the PO swapped in a 14 for some reason. The stock tank on the 86 extended cab says it's suppose to be 17. Either way I'd like to buy a 19 and I am wondering if any one has put a 19gallon in a second gen extended cab without a ton of modification or any? If it will fit in there I am hoping the sender will agree with the 19gallon but that's another issue I am not certain about

A friend of mine is doing this on his 85 4Runner. 17-19 gallon. I'll have to send him a PM (another forum) to see if he's got it done. The 19 is definitely taller and I think the fuel pump bracket has to be for the 19 gallon tank as well. I have a 17 gallon in my 86 Xtra Cab that I won't be putting back in. If you need pics or measurements let me know.
I'm pretty sure the 19 will fit since it was an option on some. It just hangs lower. I can not confirm, just going by what my bud was telling me. He said he had to order the 19 gallon tank bracket though. I think it is a 2" difference. I'm not sure about the fuel level sender.

Update on this... I got this done in my 86 extended cab 4x4. The 86 - 95 19 gallon tank fits right in the extended cab area without any issue. You have to maneuver it up and in but fits no problem. The brush guard fits as well. Beware you need a to either buy a new sender or find one for the 19 (if you don't have it). You also need the bracket that holds the fuel pump in place, The 19 gallon tank is taller, therefore needs the longer sender and fuel pump bracket. There brackets are different in the early years. The pump is different from 86 - 88 (larger pump) I ended up cutting the little fuel pump holder on the bottom of the bracket off my original 14 gallon bracket and tig welded it on the later 19 gallon bracket. I then cut and spliced on my old electrical connections onto the sender and fuel pump bracket. The later sender works just fine with the earlier setup and the gauge on the cluster is accurate.
I did a 500 mile trip up and down mountains and out in the brush with ZERO issues. It makes a HUGE difference having that extra 6 gallons of gas! The PO of my rig put a 14 gallon tank in my 86 4x4 for some reason. It just simply wouldn't do.
