I have a weird situation on my 1987 4Runner air cleaner that I am trying to understand and fix. There's a small bracket that attaches with two screws to the MAF housing. And then, as I see in photos of other trucks, there should a bolt that goes through that bracket and into the air filter housing below. Like in the photo below, with the bolt circled in red:
But on my truck, the bracket does not have a through hole, it has a tapped nut spot welded to it. It's as if a bolt is supposed to thread into it from the back side - but that corresponding part also has a nut spot welded to it. So I'm guessing that my bracket is from the wrong vehicle? I don't see this part called out separately on a parts diagram, so I'm confused. Just wondering if anyone has across this before.
Looks like the wrong part. If you remove the weld nut or drill it out so you can put a bolt in from the top, you can at least use the one you have. I haven't had a 22RE in a while so I can't go out and look at one anymore.
Here is mine, looks different from the original one you posted but could be a design change through the years?
Is that MAF/filter box aftermarket? possible the aftermarket has a different bracket?
Oh that's very interesting, that bracket looks just like mine. So if your truck is a '91, I'm guessing the PO of my truck used a bracket from a 2nd Gen on this 1st Gen. So I need to find a bracket from a 1st Gen. I believe the MAF and filter box are OEM Toyota parts, but the PO was a total hack and mixed and matched parts like there was no tomorrow. So the likelihood of him using the wrong bracket is very high! Unfortunately that bracket is not available as a separate part from Toyota.

might also be an AFM from a later year, too. my '87s have the bracket and air box that you circled in the first pic. my '88, with a 3.slow, has the bracket like yours does, but it is mounted on the left side of the AFM, rather than the right side as on the 22re motor.
pretty sure you have the correct air box - it's metal. the later versions appear to be plastic. but the AFM could easily be from a later truck.

Thanks Wally. Here is the part number on my AFM box, which appears to be correct for the truck, according to the parts diagram. So I'm guessing bozo the previous owner used the wrong bracket. You wouldn't have to have a spare one in your parts bin, would ya?
