Front driveshaft growl

Hey all, I’m working on a new to me ‘93 pickup, standard cab, 4 cylinder, 5-speed manual, 4WD. It’s a pretty beat up truck. When driving in 4-high the front “growls” when coasting. It sounds fine when accelerating but when I come off the gas and just coast the noise returns. This doesn’t happen in 2-high.
any ideas of where I should look first? Thank you

I mean .. it could be a # of things , but I would start with the constant velosity on the front drv shaft .. It needs to be greased quite often , and it may have been overlooked

It could be the differential. Pull the drain plug and see if there is any metal in the oil.

You can drive in 2H but leave the hubs locked and see if the sound changes. The wheels will be driving the gears and drive shaft, not the T-case.

Or drive in 4H but hubs unlocked. The T-case will be driving the drive shaft and spinning the gears but not actually driving the wheels.

You can pull the front drive shaft and see if it's the problem. If it still growls without the shaft, it's a diff problem.

How are the CV axles? Boots torn?

Good luck and let us know what you find.
