hello guys! so I have noticed that info on the 2tr-fe swaps is lacking and the only other documented running swap was done buy a guy who fell off the face of the earth. here is my swap, It is a formerly 2wd 1988 pickup standard cab short bed. it is now SASed and unfortunately unless you have a custom oil pan made I don't think its possible to do the swap to a 2wd or a ifs 4wd truck do to oil pan clearance. I am using the original w56 transmission.
the original 22re shortly before I pulled it out.
the engine still in the donor truck. the engine is from a 2015 Tacoma, I swapped the engine into my 2010 Tacoma a few years ago but the Tacoma was getting really rusty so I turned it into a donor
the freshly harvested 2tr-fe with the w59 bellhousing mocked up
so to keep the w56 here is the magic list of parts required. you will need a w59 belhousing off of a 1st gen 4cyl Tacoma/3rd 4cyl gen 4runner, a 3rz flywheel, a 2tr-fe clutch kit, the w56 release fork, and the 2tr-fe slave cylinder. the 2tr starter is the same as the 3rz starter so it will still work. al but 1 bolt on the 2tr lines up on the 3rz belhousing. I just left it out and I have had no issues so far.
so for engine mounting you could theoretically use 3rz swap mounts, however I found that it would interfere with the a/c compressor, the truck is a daily drive so no a/c is a big no-no for me. what I did is I bolted on 2 new 22r motor mounts onto the factory 2tr mounting brackets, cut some flat stock and bolted it to the 22r motor mounts and positioned the engine into the frame. one thing to keep in mind is the 2tr/3rz does sit at an angle so make sure you clock it right or the transmission will be torqued over into the cab. once I had the engine positioned I welded the flat stock to the frame, cut some triangle braces and welded it in. its a tight fit making sure the exhaust and the a/c compressor clears, but it will fit.
