strange tab on rims

I am currently working on refinishing my rims and would like to know if this tab near the valve stem on all my wheels can be removed. Does anyone know what purpose it may have? These are stock wheels on a '94 base model pickup.

I have those on all 4 of my factory steel wheels too. Mine came with SS trim rings. Have no idea.

Those are probably balancing weights for the wheels themselves.

considered they could be weights but they all have identical size and position on all four wheels ..

I was thinking that too. I have those tabs on all my steel wheels. My 86 truck came with SS trim rings. They have a cut out to clear the valve stem that would do the same thing though. I haven't noticed them rotating in 36 years of daily driving, so maybe the tabs do that.

Could they be weights to compensate for the metal missing due to the hole drilled for the valve stem? They may have weighed the savings, or calculated the weight after drilling out the stem hole, and put a weight to compensate for proper rim balance.

I have no idea if this is the correct answer, but it makes sense to me.

Probably not to balance. My guess is it's something for the wheel cover retaining ring to rest on, rather than the wheel itself. Maybe a better bite? Trim rings typically stayed on without issue, but the wheel covers were another story.
